Health Testing

Every single dog brought into the Cavaliers of Miami breeding program has undergone DNA screening, either through an Embark or Wisdom DNA panel.

Every dog has been carefully screened for Dry Eye, Curly Coat, Episodic Falling Syndrome and DM Affliction.

We happily share our DNA testing results with potential customers who would like more information on the health of our breeding dogs.

Some of our dogs may be gene DM CARRIERS only and at no risk for developing the affliction.

Per the Veterinary Genetics Lab “The disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion with incomplete penetrance and is caused by a mutation (c.118G>A) in the gene SOD1. Thus, two copies of the SOD1 mutation (DM/DM) confer increased risk for DM but not all DM/DM dogs across breeds will develop the disease. The variable presentation between breeds suggests that other genetic and environmental factors play a role in disease expression. There is ongoing research to identify other genetic factors that modify risk for DM in different breeds. In addition, similar disease presentation is observed in some animals lacking the SOD1 mutation.”

Cavalier Miami Sales Contract & Health Guarantee

1) Both the sire and dam have been (At MINIMUM) DNA screened for genetic illnesses and vet checked regularly. Both are healthy and age-appropriate for breeding, per our veterinarian.

2) The puppy will be vet checked, hygienic, and deemed in good health at the time of sale.

3) The puppy will be up to date on shots and worming at the time of pick-up of the puppy. 

      a) It is very important that you continue the vaccinations and worming. Please do not expose your puppy to other dogs that are not vaccinated until you’ve completed the entire vaccination schedule - around 16-20 weeks old.

        b) Lack of vet care/vaccinations VOIDS health guarantee.  

4) The buyer, at their own expense, should have the puppy examined by a Licensed Vet within 7 days of receiving the puppy to establish a baseline. Documentation must be sent to the breeder within ten days for the Health Guarantee to be honored. THIS IS STATE LAW. 

         a. If within 7 days, a Licensed Vet finds the puppy to be unhealthy or unfit for sale, the puppy may be returned for a full refund - provided the puppy has not been injured or neglected. The buyer’s veterinarian must provide a written statement deeming the puppy “unhealthy for purchase.” This does not include minor illnesses or issues such as coughs, colds, allergies, internal or external parasites such as hookworms, Coccidia or Giardia. These are very common in puppies as they have weak immune systems. We cover congenital issues only, i.e. murmur, cataracts, hernia etc. 

5) The breeder gives a one-year health guarantee against any congenital defects of the puppy. If this should occur, the puppy can be returned to the breeder, and the buyer will receive another puppy of the same breed when there is one available OR We cover up to 1/4 of the puppy’s purchase price in vet bill reimbursement. NOT BOTH. *We do require vet documentation prior to any authorization regarding payment or exchange. 

       a. This guarantee does not cover any health issues caused by neglect or injury from the buyer, IE lack of feeding, vet care, abuse. If the dog is found to be neglected, abused, or bred w/o consent, we reserve the right to SEIZE the dog (and any puppies produced), without any financial reimbursement to the buyer. 

      b. If the dog dies of congenital issues within that year, a free replacement will be offered only, not a refund. 

       c. If the dog dies of injury, illness, toxins, or non-natural causes, there will be NO REFUND or REPLACEMENT. X_________

6) Buyer will receive an informational packet on how to train their new puppy. The breeder assumes no responsibility for training difficulties/behavior problems. Each pup is socialized with daily handling, and started on crate training to promote friendly, semi-trained, well-adjusted pups.

7) The breeder does not guarantee size. We will give the buyer the weight of the puppy’s parents and can give an educated guess as to full grown weight, but there are many variables besides genetics such as diet, exercise, and energy level. 

8) The breeder does not guarantee fertility or ability to place in shows. Our puppies are strictly sold as a TOP QUALIY PET ONLY.

      a.  By signing this document, you agree that this pet WILL NOT BE BRED. We are protective of our dogs and do not take risks with their health or safety. Healthy and safe breeding requires extensive education, experience, and medical testing. UNLESS FULL RIGHTS HAVE BEEN PURCHASED, AND YOU HAVE BEEN CLEARED TO BREED, the puppy MUST be spayed or neutered. Proof of the surgery must be sent within 1 year. Any WILLFUL, unauthorized breeding of this dog will result in legal action AND SEIZURE OF THE DOG and PUPPIES. 

      b. If full rights have been purchased, seller will sign or initial here. 

9) This guarantee is NON-Transferable in the event of resale. If for any reason you are unable to keep the puppy, you agree to return the puppy to Cavaliers of Miami and not place the puppy in another home unless given written permission by the breeder.

      a.  If puppy is returned within 14 days, $500 will be deducted from your price to cover the non-refundable deposit. After 14 days, only half of the purchase price will be refunded---and only after the puppy has been placed in his/her new home. 

The other half will be kept, covering the cost of re-advertisement, any vet care and time/expense to find a new family for rehoming. If the puppy is returned after 30 days, no money will be refunded.
